Spitzer es el cuarto y final elemento del Programa de Grandes Observatorios de la NASA. La intención era lanzar Spitzer lo suficientemente temprano como para permitir que fuera contemporaneo del Telescopio Espacial Hubble y del Observatorio Chandrea de Rayos-X (antes conocido como Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility).
